Canonbury Products, supporting the homeless for over 20 years

Canonbury Products Limited is proud to have worked with the Crisis at Christmas campaign (see https://www.crisis.org.uk/crisis-this-christmas/) for over twenty years. Every year we have donated to them a wide variety of podiatry related products (consumable and equipment) which their volunteer podiatrists and staff use to treat any guests who need healthcare intervention for a wide variety of footcare disorders. More recently we have also supplied them with footwear (over 200 pairs) which we would otherwise have either had to dispose of or sell through market traders etc.

In 2017 Crisis supported around 4,000 homeless guests across 13 centres set up around Britain. In 2018 the numbers were similar, but they had increased to 15 centres to try to ensure homeless people had less distance to travel in order to find a centre. In 2019 they welcomed over 5,000 guests. Sadly the situation in respect of homelessness is not diminishing and this year, thanks to COVID and BREXIT, it is likely to be even more challenging for all concerned.

The amazing volunteers who put themselves forward for this incredibly selfless task come from all walks of life to provide, amongst other services: dentistry; woundcare; podiatry; legal; emotional; job hunting; and practical advice and care. Of course they also provide a hot meal, place to stay and companionship at a time when so many of us will be tucking into our own turkey dinner at home, in the warm and with our families.

There are so many worthwhile and vital charities all vying for our attention and our money, choosing Crisis to support has always been a simple choice for us, as it ties into our overall mission to help the podiatry and foot health professions to bring foot health and comfort to everyone, regardless of their social or financial situation.

This is what Crisis had to say last year about our involvement:

Canonbury and Crisis at Christmas

It's been half a century since Crisis was founded, as an urgent response to an unacceptable situation. We didn't expect to be here, facing a similar crisis, 50 years on.

With decades of experience helping people rebuild their lives, Crisis understands that everyone is different, and everyone has different reasons for becoming homeless. Guests at Crisis at Christmas receive more than just warmth, food and companionship – they can make the most of a range of advice, support and specialist services.

Each winter, Canonbury donates the equipment needed for hundreds of homeless people to access podiatry services. That’s hundreds of corns, calluses, blisters and infections they help treat.

Ian Richards, Head of Crisis at Christmas, said: “Crisis at Christmas is only possible because of the energy and generosity of thousands of individuals, organisations, and volunteers, who donate time, skills, and goods, united in a belief that we can end homelessness. We would like to thank Canonbury for their long term support in donating the equipment for the podiatry service, which helps us provide homeless people with vital support at Christmas.”

But Crisis don’t stop there. At their Christmas centres, they introduce people to their year-round training, education and support with housing, employment and health. This long-term support helps people to rebuild their lives and leave homelessness behind for good.

When we have a place to call our own, we have the best chance of being healthy, having a job and feeling part of society.

About Crisis

Crisis is the national charity for homeless people. We are committed to ending homelessness. Every day we see the devastating impact homelessness has on people’s lives. Every year we work side by side with thousands of people, to help them rebuild their lives and leave homelessness behind for good.

Through our pioneering research into the causes and consequences of homelessness and the solutions to it, we know what it will take to end it.

Together with others who share our resolve, we bring our knowledge, experience and determination to campaign for the changes that will prevent and end homelessness once and for all.

We mobilise a huge volunteer effort each Christmas to bring warmth, companionship and vital services to people at one of the hardest times of the year. We help people take the first steps out of homelessness, offering Crisis’ year-round support and training to help them leave homelessness behind for good.

We know that homelessness is not inevitable. We know that together we can end it.

Please, support this amazing charity if you can. No-one should be homeless and alone at any time of the year, but least of all at Christmas. Go to https://www.crisis.org.uk/get-involved/donate-to-crisis-this-christmas/ and make a donation, every little bit helps, and don’t forget to add Gift Aid.

And finally, from all of the staff at Canonbury, Simply Feet and UK PPE Warehouse, please stay safe and enjoy this Christmas. Thank you for all of your support.
